how do i make Ps2 Games work on my ps3 console i trued a game and it didnt work?

i tried to play to ps2 game on ps3 console and it didnt work why is this? i bought the ps3 because i thought u could play ps2 games on it
my ps3 is a 60gb i checked but when i called store where i bought it they said sony is coming out with new 80gb ps3 and its suppose to play all ps2 games

Playstation 2 Games will work on the 20, 60 and 80 GB models of the PS3 but not on the 40GB. Some PS2 games are incompatible. Period. However, the majority are not and can be played. It’s just pot luck.
